Man United work on signing new defender after Branthwaite twist – sources
Man United are currently unwilling to meet Everton’s £70million asking price for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, sources have told Football Insider.
Sources say the defender’s valuation is “out of the price range” United would be willing to pay at this time, as the transfer saga continues.
An initial bid from Man United of around £35million plus add-ons was rejected by Everton last month.
The Red Devils have since moved on to alternative targets, with Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt emerging as a viable alternative to the England international.
It is believed United feel De Ligt is a more attainable target – but the club are keen to add two centre-backs in the summer window.
As such, sources say a move for the Netherlands international would not exclude Man United from also signing Branthwaite.
Man United could sign Branthwaite and De Ligt this summer
Everton are close to being taken over by American billionaire Dan Friedkin – a move which could give the club a better chance of keeping hold of their prize assets.
Branthwaite has recently made his England debut and was an ever-present in Sean Dyche’s side last term.
He signed a new contract at Goodison Park in October 2023, which keeps him at the club until June 2027.

Man United released Raphael Varane at the end of his contract on Sunday (30 June) and are keen to bolster their defensive options after losing the World Cup winner.
Erik ten Hag’s side will play Europa League football next term.
In other news, Man United could land £25million stadium deal.
