Man United working to sign two stars to replace duo set to leave – sources

Man United are starting work on deals to sign two centre-backs in the upcoming summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Erik ten Hag’s side have struggled with defensive injuries throughout the 2023-24 campaign.

Their frailties were laid bare on Sunday (7 April) against Liverpool when they lined up with Harry Maguire and Willy Kambwala at the back – the only two fit centre-backs at the club.

Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw are all currently on the treatment table.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (8 April) that Man United are set to allow Varane to leave on a free transfer this summer after new talks behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Evans is also out of contract in June after joining on a free transfer last summer (2023).

United are now laying the groundwork to sign two new centre-backs in the off-season as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS outfit look to kickstart their new era.

It is believed the Red Devils will pursue both a big-money signing and another younger, less polished defender arrival.

Sources say Jarrad Branthwaite is the priority target, but Football Insider revealed on Monday (8 April) that they could face competition from Real Madrid and Newcastle United for the Everton star.

Meanwhile, sources have also told Football Insider (9 April) that Kambwala is being lined up for a more regular role at Old Trafford in the 2024-25 campaign after his performance against Liverpool.

United sit sixth in the Premier League after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign and are expected to be active in the summer transfer window.
