Man United’s James Overy deal to be approved – Stefan Borson

Manchester United’s deal for Australian sensation James Overy is expected to go through despite the transfer currently being held up by FIFA.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the FIFA rules around young players are “complex” after other teams have previously been found to have breached them.

The Sun reported on 20 July the Premier League and FIFA are currently looking into Overy’s move to Man United after he was offered a deal at Old Trafford.

The 17-year-old joined non-league side Newton Abbot Spurs in March when his family moved to England from Perth.

Under FIFA rules, the right-back wasn’t allowed to join another club within 16 weeks as it would be viewed as a “bridge transfer”, but it’s now emerged Man United tried to sign him during that period.

Borson believes the Premier League giants will receive the necessary approval to complete the transfer once they manage to tick the relevant boxes.

“I would expect the deal to go through,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They will have done their homework around it, but those FIFA rules are complex.

“Teams have breached those young player rules before.

“We know that Chelsea’s embargo was related to that in the past and City have also had allegations relating to breaching the FIFA rules in respect of young players.

“It’s a complex set of rules, but I suspect United know what they are doing on that particular deal and they will just have to tick the boxes required.

“I suspect it will go through eventually.”
