Manager confirms stance on ex-Gerrard team-mate reportedly wanted by Rangers
Fenerbahce manager Aykut Kocaman has confirmed that he doesn’t want to sell defender Martin Skrtel in the summer transfer window after it was reported that Steven Gerrard wanted to reunite with his former Liverpool team-mate at Rangers.
However Kocaman has now made it clear that he will not be selling the defensive powerhouse in the summer.
“Martin Skrtel is an important part of the team. He won’t be going anywhere this summer. Why would he? He is happy here,” the Fenerbahce boss said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“He is a brave warrior. Last week against Kasimpasa, he received the worst wound I have ever seen in my football career. His head was burst open.
“But he got five stitches and played on. He had to go to hospital after the game and get several more stitches.

“This is the type of person he is. He is an inspiration.”

Skrtel would be a brilliant signing for Rangers but it looks as though a deal will not happen unless the Glasgow giants can offer Fenerbahce a fee that they cannot refuse. The Slovakia international has been key to the Istanbul club this season by appearing 24 times in all competitions, so it is easy to understand why Kocoman is not happy with the idea of selling up. However Gerrard’s pull may see Skrtel look to return to the UK in order to reunite with his former Liverpool team-mate. It’s going to be a very interesting summer at Ibrox and there is surely going to be at least one of Gerrard’s ex-colleagues making his way up to Govan. It’s also likely that Gerrard will use his links at Liverpool to snap up a couple of fringe players or youth players. Rangers fans have a lot of reasons to be excited. Hopefully it will help them close the gap to Celtic and make Scottish football the spectacle it once was.
