Paul Clement has confirmed that he will be holding crunch talks with Everton target Gylfi Sigurdsson this weekend about his future at Swansea.
The Sunday Express has reported that the Toffees will offer the 27-year-old £140,000-a-week in a bid to lure him away from the Swans, whose Premier League safety was confirmed on Sunday after Hull’s loss to Crystal Palace.
It is reported that Everton are willing to splash £30million on the assist king, who is also on the radar of Newcastle.
Clement is wary of interest from other clubs and hopes that Sigurdsson will commit his future to Swansea after they secured top-flight football for at least another year.
“You always want to keep your best players and they’ve been excellent all season,” said Clement when talking about Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente on Sky Sports, as quoted on the Sky Sports website’s transfer blog at 07:43AM on Tuesday.
“We’re going to have those discussions this weekend and in the early days of next week to decide how we move forward – myself, the chairman Huw Jenkins and our two main owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien.
“But hopefully they have enjoyed being part of what we’ve done in the second half of the season.
“Hopefully they realise that we’re a good club, they’ve got good team-mates and they really want to stay here as well. I hope they do.”
Everton are on the lookout for new attacking midfielders due to the on-going contract dispute with Ross Barkley, who is yet to make a decision on his Goodison Park future.
Sigurdsson is known for his ability to provide assists to his teammates, doing so 13 times in all competitions, as well as netting ten goals in 39 appearances.
The 49-times Iceland international isn’t the only playmaker on Ronald Koeman’s radar though as the Mirror have recently reported that West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini is a target while another report in the Mirror claims that Ajax’s Davy Klaassen has been scouted by the Toffees boss.
Football Insider Verdict
Sigurdsson is a very good player and could easily get into most teams that are playing in the Champions League – including some of the Premier League’s top four. Everton would be very lucky to get hold of him and it’s likely that the promise of Europa League football could see Clement become very frustrated in his talks next week. Out of all the playmakers that the Toffees are linked with, Sigurdsson is definitely the best option. He has bags of Premier League and international experience to his name, and with his age he is hitting the peak of his career. £30million could be an absolute steal.
