Alex McLeish has insisted Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will be “upset” about the lack of playing time Troy Parrott has had on loan at Millwall.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League and Scotland manager suggested Mourinho and his staff will have been given assurances over the 18-year-old’s playing time when he made the switch across London in the summer window.
Football Insider revealed last week Spurs are set to terminate the striker’s loan deal midway through the January window after he struggled to make an impact at the New Den.
The north London giants are hopeful of agreeing a new loan deal next month despite him not scoring for Millwall.
Parrott played nine games for the Lions, including five starts, but did not complete a full 90 minutes.
Asked by Football Insider what Mourinho will be thinking seeing the young striker struggle in south London, McLeish said: “He will be upset about that.
“When a team from a lower division comes to a Premier League team asking for one of their players, they probably had talks between Jose and his staff and Millwall saying that he’ll be in the team and then they don’t play him for one reason or another.
“Normally there’s a financial agreement where if you don’t play him you’ve got to pay more of his wages and that’s to make sure he does get the game time. I’ve seen a lot of clubs do that.
“Whether they do it now, I’m not sure but I know a few years ago teams would say ‘if you play him, we’ll pay half of his wages, if you don’t pay him you’ll pay a lot of his wages’.
“You get that, it’s a weird statement, but that’s an agreement a lot of clubs put in place and I’m not sure why Tottenham wouldn’t have done that.”
In other news, Football Insider can reveal a trio of Championship clubs are keen on signing a Tottenham winger on loan.
