Manager second favourite for Rangers post would combust in Ibrox cauldron – Guardian

Billy Davies would “spontaneously combust” in the Rangers cauldron, according to a report.

The Guardian claim the spiky Scot is one of the early frontrunners to success Mark Warburton as the manager of the Ibrox giants.

Bookmakers Sky Bet installed Davies as second favourite for the post at 5/2 on Saturday afternoon, behind only former Rangers boss Alex McLeish, who is 13/8, in the betting.

Rangers announced on Friday night that Warburton’s tenure had come to an end after his resignation had been accepted by the club’s board.

Former Rangers midfielder Davies has not managed a club since he was sacked by Nottingham Forest for the second time in March 2014 following what was a widely criticised return to the club.

“The post will hold obvious appeal to those out of work but with a Rangers allegiance; Billy Davies and Alex McLeish have already been quoted,” reported in the Guardian. “Davies may spontaneously combust in this cauldron, while 11 years having passed since McLeish ended his stint at the club.”

Davies, 52, who has also managed Motherwell, Preston and Derby in coaching career that began in his native Scotland in 1998, is renowned for his temperamental nature.

He steered Derby into the Premier League in 2006/07 via the Championship play-offs but left the club in November of the following season with them marooned at the foot of the table in the top flight.

Warburton leaves Rangers with the club third in the Scottish Premiership but they are currently in the shadow of bitter rivals Celtic, who are romping off with the title after opening up a monumental 27-point gap at the top.

In other Rangers news, this is the huge sum lost by Mark Warburton after his behind-the-scenes manoeuvrings horribly backfired.
