Watford’s new manager Javi Gracia is seeking talks with Troy Deeney to resolve his future at Vicarage Road after he was axed from the first-team by his predecessor Marco Silva, according to a report.
The Sun claims that Newcastle United and West Brom both want to sign Deeney, 29, during the January transfer window and are keeping an close eye on any developments revolving around the powerhouse forward.
It is understood that the Magpies remain in dissaray after the breakdown in Mike Ashley’s sale of the club while the Baggies would have to sell Jonny Evans if they were to make a move for the Watford club captain, who is said to be valued at £20million.
Now he is in charge of the Hornerts, Gracia wants to see if he can help Deeney get his season back on track after a series of issues with form and discipline that has seen him miss seven games this season due to suspensions.
Deeney has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season but has scored just three goals.
Football Insider verdict
Deeney would definitely be an improvement on what Rafa Benitez currently has in his Newcastle squad, but only just. The powerful forward is very experienced and has a lot of leadership qualities. While his form with Watford has not been great this season and it is said that he is seeing a sports psychologist, it seems that the former Walsall player may just be reaching the end of his cycle at Vicarage Road and a move is in order. Newcastle will do very well to be able to afford the £20million asking fee or even whittle that down slight. West Brom are perhaps favourites to get him as Deeney is local to that area of the country and there’s more chance Albion could find the funds.
