Manchester City line up mega money Tottenham swoop - report

By Harry Sykes

Manchester City are lining up a January swoop for Toby Alderweireld following his Tottenham contract stalemate, according to a report.

Football site ESPN FC, quoting sources close to the player, claim that City are keeping a close eye on the centre-back just two months after signing his former teammate Kyle Walker for over £50million.

It is said that Etihad Stadium manager Pep Guardiola is set to make a new centre-back his main priority in the winter window.

Alderweireld is high on the wanted list of the City boss after negotiations over a contract extension at Spurs stalled.

Moreover, the Belgium international’s agent has fuelled speculation over his client’s future by claiming the club must offer improved terms or let him leave, with eight leading teams primed to sign him.

Alderweireld has a Tottenham contract that runs until 2020 but there is a fixed-fee clause of £25million that can be triggered in 2019.

ESPN FC report that Spurs could be reluctantly forced to consider offers for the defender if they do not agree fresh terms.

In other Tottenham news, a Sky journalist has revealed that a last-gasp Spurs striker switch failed after an agreement had been reached.
