Manchester City fans ‘need to have a serious conversation about Phil Foden’ after ‘unacceptable’ England display
Manchester City supporters have been left thinking about the future of Phil Foden at the club after he failed to deliver for England in a 1-0 defeat against Japan.
In the absence of striker Harry Kane, Thomas Tuchel selected Foden to play in a false nine role and spearhead England’s attack.
It was Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma who grabbed the only goal of the game though in the first half, as Japan came away with the victory at Wembley Stadium, whilst Foden was substituted before the hour mark.
The 25-year-old’s goal drought in all competitions continued, with his last goal coming for Man City against Crystal Palace in the Premier League in December 2025.
Man City face Liverpool next in the FA Cup quarter-finals, and there is no guarantee that the midfielder will be in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI.

Foden’s recent form and lack of minutes for Man City have raised questions over whether he will sign a new long-term contract at the club.
His current deal at the Etihad is due to expire in 2027, and he has only ever played for the Citizens having come through their academy.

Man City fans have speculated around his future at the club, and whether the midfielder is good enough to start for England following his performance against the Japanese.
One fan thinks that Foden failed to take another opportunity in the England team, whilst another questioned what his best position is.
Man City could block Phil Foden exit
Man City could be reluctant to let Foden leave the Etihad in the summer, as Guardiola already looks likely to lose two midfield stars.
Bernardo Silva’s contract expires at the end of the season, whilst Rodri could move to Real Madrid having admitted he wants to return to Spain in the future.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he believes Guardiola will be concerned about his Man City squad next season, if Silva and Rodri do depart.
Man City may have to target a new midfielder to add to their squad in the summer to replace the duo, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson already on their radar.
