Injury blow: Young will undergo groin surgery and is facing months out

Ashley Young could be facing a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an injury in Manchester United’s Premier League clash at Liverpool on Sunday.

The United player fell to the ground clutching his side towards the end of the first half and immediately called for medical attention.

Young, who had played at right-back in the first half at Anfield, was withdrawn at the 41-minute mark and replaced by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson. The teenager slotted in at left-back and Matteo Darmian switched over to right-back.

United manager Louis van Gaal, who is already without full-backs Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia due to injury, will now fear Young could face a spell in the club’s treatment room.

The first half between the Premier League rivals finished goal-less, with Liverpool dominating the opening period.

The hosts had seven shots, while the visitors did not manage a single attempt.
