Manchester United handed key player boost ahead of Stoke clash

By North-west correspondent Alex Stevens

Matteo Darmian has handed a fitness boost to Manchester United ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League clash against Stoke.

The right-back missed United’s morale-boosting FA Cup win over Derby last Friday with a head injury sustained against Southampton six days earlier.

But Darmian is set to be in the squad that faces Stoke at Old Trafford after being pictured among the United players who arrive at their pre-match base, the five-star Lowry Hotel, earlier on Tuesday.

Darmian’s return will be welcomed by under-fire manager Louis van Gaal, whose options at full-back have been decimated by injuries to Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia.

The club made a deadline-day move for Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy, but it was blocked by Arsene Wenger and the France international moved to Bordeaux for the rest of the season.

United go into the match with the pressure on the team and Van Gaal to not only win but produce the kind of adventurous display that has been so absent this season.
