Morgan Schneiderlin and Phil Jones will be in Louis van Gaal’s thinking as the manager weighs up his options for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Sunderland on Saturday.
Schneiderlin has been overlooked in favour of the central midfield duo of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini for the club’s last two league matches.
United’s much-improved performances in their 3-1 win over Stoke and last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea could mean that Van Gaal selects an unchanged team.
But Schneiderlin replaced Fellaini in the closing stages at Stamford Bridge and could be recalled for the lunchtime showdown at the Stadium of Light, where his energy and mobility could prove valuable against Sam Allardyce’s side.
Jones, who has not played since the 2-1 win over Swansea on 2 January due to an ankle injury, made his comeback as an over-age player for the Under-21s in their 7-0 win over Norwich on Monday night.
In other Manchester United team news, Will Keane could be promoted from the Under-21s after scoring a remarkable five goals in that match.
The 23-year-old striker, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Preston, has scored 10 goals in his last five Under-21s matches.
Manchester United (possible): De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson; Carrick, Schneiderlin; Lingard, Mata, Martial; Rooney.
