Wayne Rooney is set to return to training ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night, Football Insider sources understand.
The United skipper is in line to give Louis van Gaal a boost after missing Saturday’s win over Watford through illness.
But Rooney was pictured out in Manchester on Sunday, and a United dressing room source has told Football Insider that the England international had made a full recovery after being struck down following his return from international duty.
Van Gaal turned to Memphis Depay to spearhead the United line against Watford and the winger-turned-striker responded with the visitors’ first goal in a 2-1 win.
Van Gaal has been desperately short of forward options after losing Anthony Martial, James Wilson and Marouane Fellaini as well as Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones and long-term absentees Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia.
Teenager Marcus Rashford, just 18, was fast-tracked into the senior set-up on Saturday and was named on the bench for the first time.
A win for United against PSV at Old Trafford on Wednesday would secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League in their return to the competition, after missing out on it last season.
Van Gaal’s team then play Leicester on Saturday in a top-of-the-table Premier League clash.
