Marc Cucurella responds to Liverpool star amid Chelsea title race

Marc Cucurella has reacted after Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister took to social media to celebrate his side’s win over Tottenham.

Cucurella and his Chelsea side were left frustrated on Sunday (22 December) after being held to a goalless draw by Everton, having been denied a first half penalty.

That prevented the Blues from moving ahead of Arne Slot’s men at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool took full advantage of that later in the day by beating Tottenham 6-3 to ensure they will spend Christmas four points clear at the top of the standings, with Mac Allister getting on the scoresheet.

After the midfielder took to Instagram to celebrate that win Cucurella was among those to respond to the post by liking it, despite the setback it dealt his team in the title race.

The former Brighton midfielder wrote: “An important victory and a goal, to keep dreaming. It’s a joy to be part of this team! Thank you to the fans for the support that comes from everywhere. Let’s keep pushing.”

Cucurella and Mac Allister do of course already know each other well after playing together for the Seagulls during the 2021/22 season.

As a result the left-back is surely doing no more than showing his support for an old friend after what he did for Liverpool against Spurs.

Even so it is hard not to imagine that what happened on Sunday will be frustrating for those associated with Chelsea.

While they have consistently played down talk of being in a title race, they privately ought to see this as an opportunity given the form and position they are in compared to others.

Victory for Liverpool at the weekend though did harm the chances of that happening, which will no doubt generate some disappointment even if Arne Slot’s men are looking increasingly imperious.

It will therefore be interesting to see how all of that affects the mentality at Chelsea as they prepare to return to action against Fulham on Boxing Day.
