Marc Guehi wants Liverpool assurances as Crystal Palace transfer talks held

Marc Guehi has asked for promises to be kept as Liverpool and Crystal Palace have held transfer negotiations over his potential signing.

With one-year left on his contract, time is running out for the Eagles to make a handsome profit on their sensational club captain.

His future remains up-in-the-air as many clubs aim to sign the Englishman with sources telling Football Insider on 12 August that Liverpool and Newcastle will make moves for Guehi later in the transfer window.

Newcastle were desperate to secure the signing of Guehi last summer and it looks like they could be pipped to the post with the Reds ramping up their interest following the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, leaving them light at centre-back.

Marc Guehi has one eye on the World Cup amid active negotiations

According to a report by the Athletic (12 August), Liverpool have held talks with the England international over a potential move.

Yet, crucially, the 25-year-old wants “assurances over game time” with the World Cup taking place at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The centre-back was a key part of Sir Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 side and will want to repeat that again under Thomas Tuchel on the global stage.

Arne Slot must make promises to Guehi despite presence of Van Dijk and Konate

Football Insider verdict

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Eagles star defender is one of the best centre-backs in the league and has deservedly received attention as he looks to take the next step in his career.

Moreover, the manner in which he has kept his head down to focus on his football has been commendable, rather than throwing his toys out the pram.

However, to ensure the Chelsea academy graduate does move to Liverpool manager Arne Slot will have to personally communicate to Guehi about how he will fit in next season.

Currently, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the first-choice pairing in the heart of the defence, but fitness issues for the Frenchman suggests he needs to be rotated around Champions League fixtures.

Therefore, the Dutch boss will have to be candid with the former Swansea loanee about how he envisions utilising Guehi around a heavy load of fixtures.

If the England international can get regular football, perhaps playing once a week when midweek fixtures kick in, that would keep the Palace talisman content for sure.

But, until an action plan has been drawn up, this will be a transfer discussion that could plod on if the centre-back is not reassured over minutes.
