Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford respond to devastated Emiliano Martinez’s message

Emi Martinez was left devastated in a message on social media after Aston Villa’s season came to a disappointing end.

Aston Villa narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification on the final day, with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United meaning they finished sixth, missing out on goal difference.

Their frustrations began when Martinez was sent off for Aston Villa in controversial fashion. The Argentine was shown red despite what appeared to be a foul in the build-up, leaving Villa with a mountain to climb.

It could also prove to be his final appearance for the club. Just days earlier, Martinez appeared to wave goodbye in tears to the Aston Villa fans in their final home match — a moment many took as a possible farewell.

Still, the goalkeeper shared a heartfelt message for the fans, thanking them for their support through the highs and lows of the campaign amid the speculation.

Man United and Saudi clubs circle Emi Martinez as Aston Villa future remains uncertain

Despite the growing speculation over his future and a disappointing end to the campaign, Martinez had a message of gratitude for supporters on Instagram.

He wrote: “3rd consecutive European football. Not what we wanted but that shows how far we have come as a club. The fans were amazing as always, thank you!”

The post was met with plenty of engagement, with loanees Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, who are both set to leave the club, among those to respond.

Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also liked the post, showing appreciation to the message.

However, his future at Villa Park has become increasingly uncertain in recent weeks. Football Insider revealed Martinez has recently changed agents, which is a strong indication he could be preparing for a summer move.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia have expressed interest, but former Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness has claimed that Manchester United are also tracking Martinez as they plan a reshuffle in the goalkeeping department.

Missing out on Champions League qualification could have financial repercussions for Villa, who may be forced to cash in on key players to stay within Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Football Insider revealed on 27 May that Aston Villa are now prepared to accept offers for star striker Ollie Watkins, viewing the 29-year-old as a valuable and sellable asset.

Watkins has drawn long-term interest from top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool. With his market value peaking and Villa needing to balance the books, this summer could be the ideal opportunity to sanction a big-money sale.
