Marcos Senesi hailed as ‘real upgrade’ for David Moyes amid Everton transfer news

Marcos Senesi could bolster Everton’s defensive ranks if he was to join the club, according to former chief executive Keith Wyness.

Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the Toffees need to sign a centre-back in the summer, and that Senesi would be a “real upgrade” on their current options.

Senesi’s contract at Bournemouth expires at the end of the season, and multiple clubs are interested in signing the 28-year-old on a free transfer.

The centre-back has started all but one Premier League game for Bournemouth this season, having benefitted from the departures of Dean Huijsen and Ilya Zabarnyi last summer.

Everton have also held interest in John Stones returning to the club, as David Moyes looks to upgrade his squad in the transfer market.

Marcos Senesi in ‘great demand’ ahead of summer window

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – would back Senesi to be a success at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though thinks a new striker and a full-back should be greater priorities for Moyes over a centre-back.

Marcos Senesi’s 2025-26 Premier League stats this season for Bournemouth.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Difficult one, he’s a player in great demand and I know that there’s been talk of him going to Italy.

“Center back, Argentinian, there is a lot of interest in him. Jarrad Branthwaite, if he’s fit, and Jake O’Brien are both young players, and then you’ve got James Tarkowski and Michael Keane coming towards the end of their situation.

“There’s been talk of John Stones. A lot of players linked at that level. I do think they need one more centre-back to come in. This would be a real upgrade if it was to go through.

“But is it the position that Everton really need to upgrade? That’s what I would be concerned about, because I think the money that’s going to be spent should be really on fullbacks and strikers at the moment. That seems to be the general consensus as well.

“There’s been a lot of work being done at the moment in those sorts of areas. But of course, if you can get a quality centre-back like that and can come in, then it’s going to assist, but a lot will depend on how they want to shuffle the squad.

“I do think full backs and strikers are where we’re going to be looking, and that may be where the emphasis will be rather than on the position where Senesi could work for us.”

Everton braced for offer on midfield talent

Whilst Everton are making plans to strengthen their squad, Moyes must be aware of interest in his star players.

James Garner’s recent call-up to the England squad amid a fine season at Everton has seen the 25-year-old emerge on the radar of former club Nottingham Forest.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Nottingham Forest could make a move for Garner in the summer.

Garner’s contract at Everton does not expire until 2030, so Nottingham Forest may have to pay a big fee to tempt the Toffees into a sale.
