Marcus Rashford ‘almost unbuyable’ at Aston Villa thanks to Man United

Aston Villa will find it “almost impossible” to buy Marcus Rashford in the summer because of a decision made by Man United, according to Tim Sherwood.

Rashford joined Aston Villa on-loan from Man United in January, having been frozen out by Ruben Amorim.

The forward’s form had dipped significantly in recent seasons, but joining the Midlands club has given the England international a new lease of life on the pitch, with Rashford impressing in recent performances.

Those good performances have now led to interest from abroad, with Aston Villa now in a race with Barcelona for the 27-year-old’s signature.

Marcus Rashford’s ‘huge contract’ a major transfer block

Ahead of their crucial Champions League tie against Club Brugge, Aston Villa had the chance to pay-off both Rashford and Marco Asensio’s loan deals by progressing to the quarter-finals.

Both players have impressed since joining the club in the winter transfer window, with the Man United loanee assisting three of the Spaniard’s five goals since joining the club.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Special on 12 March, Tottenham icon Michael Dawson, and former Spurs manager Sherwood spoke about the two players, and the difficulties Villa will face in keeping the England international, with Dawson saying (7.18pm): “I love to see a player who’s fallen off a cliff get an opportunity, and this could have been his last opportunity by the way, because if it’d carried on where do you go then? Who’s gonna take a chance on huge wages?

“I think he’s been brilliant, him and Asensio.”

Sherwood then added: “He’s still got that problem at the end of the season hasn’t he. Who’s gonna be able to afford to take him?

“He’s gonna have to be absolutely sensational between now and the end of the season for Villa to say ‘we want to pay that wage on you to come to the football club’.

“He’s almost unbuyable, Marcus Rashford. It’s no fault of his own, they’ve given him this huge contract.

“It’s almost impossible for Marcus to be a Villa player next season unless they really push the boat out and try and create some funds from somewhere, but he’s gonna have to be sensational between now and then for them to want to do that.”

Having started in Bruges, Rashford forced Kyriani Sabbe to drag him down on the edge of Brugge’s box, with the young right-back earning a red card for his foul, as the Villa winger was through on goal.

The on-loan winger also assisted Asensio’s second goal, with a lovely piece of play down the left-hand side, as Villa romped to a 3-0 win on the night, and a 6-1 win on aggregate to set-up a meeting with PSG.

Aston Villa should focus on signing Marco Asensio this summer

Football Insider Verdict

Despite the brilliant performances from Rashford, Asensio has arguably been the standout performer after a busy January window.

Andres Garcia, Donyell Malen, Rashford and Axel Disasi were brought in, along with the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder.

Each of the aforementioned players have impressed in their own right, but the five goals from seven games highlight the Spaniard’s brilliance.

A three-time Champions League winner during his time in Spain, Asensio’s career stagnated after joining the Parisians.

But the move to the Midlands has been transformative, and it would be no surprise to see Unai Emery push for his permanent signing this summer, especially after the Spaniard scored twice from the bench against Brugge to take his tally to seven goals in eight games for the Villains.
