Marcus Rashford Exclusive: Man United new manager update

Man United could look to cash in on Marcus Rashford if his performances do not improve under a new manager, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that, while United would ideally like to keep him, a new boss may want to move in a new direction.

Rashford, 26, has had a mixed season at Old Trafford so far and has scored four goals and provided three assists across 14 games in all competitions.

However, speculation about his long-term future at the club has grown since Football Insider revealed that talks have previously taken place with PSG.

Now, Brown has explained that any incoming boss will assess the winger’s level for themselves, but he must find more consistency if he wants to impress.

Of the winger’s four goals this season, two came in the 7-0 League Cup thrashing of League One outfit Barnsley, with his only league strike against bottom-placed side Southampton.

This has raised questions surrounding his ability to perform at the highest level on a regular basis, and it has been said that if he cannot prove himself, the new boss could cash in on his signature.

Marcus Rashford may be sold by new Man United manager

Following the decision to sack Erik ten Hag on 28 October, the new manager will be faced with several big calls almost immediately after his arrival.

The current favourite to take the role is Ruben Amorim, after Football Insider exclusively revealed that talks had been held with the Sporting CP boss.

One of those decisions will be considering Rashford’s future, and Brown, who also spent a period as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two, has insisted that the winger will need to prove himself to the new boss or risk being sold at the end of the season.

Ideally I think they’d like to keep him,” he told Football Insider.

“Unless they get to a situation where they’re fed up with his up-and-down form.

“The right managers would’ve handled the situation a lot better than it has been.

“They wouldn’t put up with his tendency to give you a 9/10 display one week and then a 4/10 for the next few games when the team are struggling.

“So if a new boss is going to come in, they might see that and think they’re better off getting some money and buying a new winger.

“Everybody at United wants Rashford to succeed, but he needs to prove he can perform on a regular basis.

“The change of management should give him the chance to do that, and if he can’t, he could well be told to leave.

“On top of that, how long has Rashford got to be at the club before they figure out his best position?

“Ten Hag used him as a left-winger, a striker, a right-winger, a number ten, just let him nail down one role.

“That’s something the new manager has to figure out too.”
