Marcus Rashford, John McGinn react to Lucas Digne pre huge Aston Villa v PSG clash
Lucas Digne has shared a positive message on social media ahead of Aston Villa welcoming PSG to Villa Park in the Champions League.
Despite going ahead last in Paris, Villa were pegged back three-times to give them a mountain to climb in the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash with PSG.
Morgan Rogers had given the visitors the lead against the run of play before Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia turned the tie around with two strikes of the highest quality either side of the break.
Just as Villa thought they had limited the damage, an excellent piece of skill from Nuno Mendes allowed the left-back to finish high into an empty net, and end the night 3-1 to the hosts.
Lucas Digne all smiles before important PSG game
In a message from Digne’s official instagram account on Monday (14 April), the France international posted an image smiling while in training before the match with a caption of a star emoji alongside purple and blue hearts.
The post received reactions from Marcus Rashford, who is set to leave Manchester United permanently this summer, and John McGinn.
The left-back will be vital for Unai Emery in the second-leg
Football Insider Verdict
Up against PSG’s interchangeable front-three in Ousmane Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia and either Bradley Barcola or Doué, Digne will need to provide Villa with defensive stability as well as creative output.
The 31-year-old is yet to register an assist in Villa’s eight Champions League outings this term, however boasts five domestically.
Digne’s ability to play out from the back could also be key in beating the visitors’ high-press and open spaces for Villa’s dangerous attacking talent.
PSG stats | Aston Villa stats |
Possession – 75% | Possession – 25% |
Total shots – 29 | Total shots – 7 |
On target – 10 | On target – 2 |
Off target – 8 | Off target – 4 |
As shown through the stats from the first-leg, PSG dominated possession with 74%, however this may be different this time out with Villa needing to take the game to their opposition.
One aspect which is clear is that the hosts will need to put their best performance in of the season, if they are to overcome the two-goal deficit from the first-leg.
