Marcus Tavernier superb, Antoine Semenyo rubbish – Bournemouth ratings v Brentford

Bournemouth saw their European hopes dealt a blow as they were beaten 2-1 by Brentford at the Vitality Stadium.

Having thrown away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Tottenham last time out, the Cherries will have been looking to bounce back from that frustration here on 15 March.

Things would start well for them, as Milos Kerkez‘ pull-back deflected off Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt and into his own net to put Bournemouth 1-0 up after 17 minutes.

The visitors though would pull level when Yoane Wissa headed home a Bryan Mbeumo corner on the half-hour mark.

Thomas Frank’s side would then complete the turnaround with 20 minutes remaining, as a long throw into the box wasn’t dealt with by Bournemouth, allowing Christian Norgaard to turn in from close range.

In the end, that would be enough for Brentford to secure all three points, as Andoni Iraola saw his side’s Premier League form continue to dip.

Here is a look at how Football Insider rated the performances of the Bournemouth squad during that clash with Brentford.

Bournemouth defence undone by set-pieces

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5

Caught in no man’s land from the corner for Brentford’s equaliser, after conceding a costly penalty against Tottenham last weekend, making this a tough period for the Chelsea loanee.

Lewis Cook – 6

Once again employed at right-back, the 28-year-old again did a solid job in covering that flank for Bournemouth.

Ilya Zabarnyi – (off for Jebbison, ’86) – 6

After Zabarnyi had been controversially sent off in the defeat to Wolves, he returned from his ban here with a decent showing.

Dean Huijsen – 7

Huijsen is attracting interest from Liverpool ahead of the summer window and impressed here with some good defensive work and a few flashes in attack as well.

Milos Kerkez – 7

Kerkez is also being tipped for a move to Liverpool in the near future, and will have caught the eye again by forcing the own goal, while not being too troubled defensively.

Ryan Christie – (off for Sinisterra, ’67) – 6

Not one of his more effective games in the centre of the park for Iraola’s side.

Tyler Adams – (off for Hill, ’79) – 5

May feel he could have got to the ball before it dropped into the path of Norgaard for Brentford’s second, and was taken off shortly after.

Marcus Tavernier an attacking bright spark

Marcus Tavernier – 8 – Man of the Match

Was the closest Bournemouth player to getting a touch on the opener, and looked a consistent threat throughout the game.

Justin Kluivert – (off for Brooks, ’79) 6

Produced one excellent ball early in the second half that Semenyo headed onto the bar but otherwise not as dangerous as he has been in recent games.

Justin Kluivert Bournemouth
Justin Kluivert did not have his best game against Brentford

Antoine Semenyo – 4

May feel he should have done better with that aforementioned header, and otherwise he rarely looked like getting on the scoresheet when Bournemouth needed it.

Evanilson – 6

Looked lively at times and got into the box on a number of occasions, without getting much of a sniff at goal.

Substitutes

Luis Sinisterra (on for Christie, ’67, off for Ouattara, ’86) – 5

Put in one good ball before he appearance from the bench was cut short with what can only be assumed is a recurrence of an injury problem.

David Brooks (on for Kluivert, ’79) – 6

Brought a good save out of Flekken from close range shortly after his introduction.

James Hill (on for Adams, ’79) – 5

Couldn’t make much of an impact and picked up a booking in the final moments.

Dango Outtara (on for Sinisterra, ’85) – 5

Arguably surprising not to see him on sooner with Borunemouth looking for a way back into the game.

Daniel Jebbison (on for Zabarnyi, ’86) – 5

Brought off the bech in the final moments as Iraola hunted an equaliser.
