Martin O’Neill could suffer reputation downfall vs Dundee after latest Celtic news

Martin O’Neill’s reputation at Celtic could take a massive hit on Sunday if Dundee achieves back-to-back home league victories over the Old Firm side.

The match at Dens Park is critical for the Hoops, and a victory is no doubt needed if they are to stay in the title race.

Before the international break, they suffered an embarrassing defeat to Dundee United, which saw them fall to third in the division.

However, victory on Sunday isn’t guaranteed, with Dundee previously beating the Hoops 2-0 at Dens Park back in October.

Below, Football Insider examines what a defeat could do to O’Neill’s reputation at Celtic.

Dundee eye 77-year-old vs Celtic

According to The Courier on 2 April, Dundee could achieve a 77-year first if they achieve a victory over the Hoops on Sunday.

The Dark Blues have not achieved back-to-back home league victories over Celtic since March 1958, when they won 5-3 and 2-1 across two different campaigns.

Therefore, after previously winning the last encounter at Dens Park back in October, they have a chance to match this on Sunday.

If this occurs, it could see O’Neill’s reputation at Celtic Park plummet. The manager has been largely shielded for the criticism at the Old Firm club this season, with supporters’ anger being directed towards the ownership.

However, with the team available to him, O’Neill should be able to deliver a comfortable victory over Dundee.

As a result, if the manager is to oversee back-to-back defeats inflicted by both Dundee clubs, criticism may start to mount on O’Neill.

What are Celtic’s summer transfer window plans?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Celtic must make major signings in the summer if they are to win back support from their fanbase.

Supporters have turned against the board this season after multiple disastrous decisions that eventually forced them to recall O’Neill to the dugout.

However, it remains to be seen if they will be willing to spend big in the summer transfer window, especially if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

Whoever comes in to replace O’Neill will likely indicate how badly the Celtic are willing to invest, as if it’s an unknown or underwhelming appointment, a squad overhaul may be unlikely.
