‘Massive’ Rangers claim issued by Campbell after Alfredo Morelos talks confirmed

Rangers need to qualify for the Champions League group stages to keep hold of their “best players”, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent may refuse to sign new deals if the Gers fail to qualify.

On Tuesday (2 August), Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side lost 2-0 to Union Saint-Gilloise in the first leg of their third round qualifying tie.

Rangers welcome the Belgian side to Ibrox this Tuesday in the return leg.

If the Glasgow club fail to overturn the deficit they will drop into the Europa League.

When asked Football Insider if qualifying was a necessity for the Gers, Campbell said: “Tuesday night is massive for Rangers.

It is massive for that football club.

They have had to move and shake this summer. A few players have gone. [Joe] Aribo and [Calvin] Bassey have left.

If they want extra funds and to keep the likes of Morelos and Kent, they need to be in the Champions League. It is really important.

If you are in the Champions League group stages you will keep your best players. It is essential that they qualify.”

Kent and Morelos have both entered the final 12 months of their contracts at Ibrox.

As quoted by Football Scotland (29 July), Van Bronckhorst revealed the club are in talks with the pair over new deals.
