‘Massive upgrade, best news ever’ – West Ham fans react as new signing agreed

West Ham supporters have expressed their excitement at the return of Lukasz Fabianski while all pining for Graham Potter to make a certain decision on his goalkeeping ranks now that he is back.

West Ham‘s aims to progress under Graham Potter this season saw them undergo an overhaul of their goalkeeping options in the summer window as Lukasz Fabianski departed after seven years at the club.

Mads Hermansen joined the club from Leicester City to provide competition to Alphonse Areola, but both players have been poor up to now this season with the Irons struggling under Potter.

Hermansen made mistakes against Sunderland and Chelsea, while Areola put in a poor performance against Wolves when he was tasked to deputise in the Carabao Cup.

Reports surfaced earlier this week that West Ham had opened talks to re-sign Fabianski to come in and help out, just a few short months after his initial exit, and his return has now been confirmed with Hammers fans all making a certain demand of Potter for their next game against Tottenham.

West Ham fans demand Lukasz Fabianski to be reinstated as their first-choice goalkeeper

West Ham officially announced Fabianski’s re-signing with a post to their X account on Wednesday (10 September), saying: “West Ham United is pleased to confirm that Łukasz Fabiański has rejoined the Club on a contract until the end of the 2025/26 season.”

Many Hammers supporters are overjoyed at the former Poland international’s return, despite him now being 40-years-old, and they have called upon head-coach Potter to make him their number one keeper once again.

One fan replied to the club’s post by saying: “Straight to number 1…” while another echoed that sentiment and said: “Number 1 keeper. Starts Saturday. Oh if we had a decent Manager and not Potter that is.”

Another fan insisted that he is better than both Hermansen and Areola, saying: “Great to have him back because he’s better than the two keepers we already have, but re-signing players two months after letting them go makes us look incompetent. Whoever is behind letting him go needs to explain it.”

While others bemoaned the club letting him leave at the end of last season as one replied: “Excellent news. But they never have let him go in the first place,” while another said: “Shouldn’t have ever got rid.”

The Hammers have been in clear need of another new signing to come in and bolster Potter’s options between the sticks, and who better than a player who served them so well between 2018 and 2025.

Fabianski should be a starter for West Ham once again

Potter’s side have been poor in all but one of their first four games of the new campaign, and the majority of their woes have been down to goalkeeping issues, which seems unlikely to change drastically anytime soon unless a major change is made.

Neither Hermansen nor Areola have covered themselves in glory so far this term, and the sheer fact that the latter was not trusted to step up to become Potter’s number one after Fabianski’s exit should tell him everything he needs to know about where he stands in his squad.

Fabianski’s West Ham career stats

Fabianski was very reliable and commanding throughout his time at the London Stadium, hence why he was their first-choice keeper for five of his seven seasons before he neared 40-years-old.

Despite his age, now that he has re-joined the club then he should not only be as a back-up or to provide competition in training, it should be to start games, beginning with their huge derby clash against Tottenham this weekend.
