Whelan: This is how King signing is ‘made in heaven’ for Everton
A striker partnership of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Joshua King could be a match made in heaven for Everton, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker hailed the addition of the Norway international from Bournemouth as “a really shrewd signing” for the Toffees.
King had long been linked with a move away from the south coast and chose to join Everton instead of Fulham on deadline day after both clubs agreed a deal with the Cherries.
The 29-year-old has agreed a deal that will keep him at Goodison Park until the end of the season.
He previously played five seasons in the Premier League with Bournemouth where he scored 48 goals in 161 top-flight appearances.
“Everton have got a really good player there,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“I’m just happy that the move has actually happened because I’m sick of talking about it!
“Now he’s got the move and is out of Bournemouth which was a long saga in itself.
“I think that’s a really shrewd move by Ancelotti. He’s got someone with a bit of pace, a real direct style of running, plays on the shoulder of defenders.
“I think if he gets a good relationship going with Calvert-Lewin that could be a match made in heaven.”
Calvert-Lewin has scored 11 goals in 18 Premier League games this season and has operated in a front three alongside Richarlison and James Rodriguez.
King can play up front alongside the England international or as a wide player on either side of the striker.
In other news, an Everton transfer collapsed at the 11th hour on deadline day.
