Matheus Cunha has already compared Man United target to Casemiro ahead of potential transfer

Matheus Cunha has earned mixed reviews since completing his transfer from Wolves to Manchester United.

While Cunha was electric during Man United’s win over Brighton, similar can’t be said for his last performance before the international break.

Man United fans slammed Cunha’s selfishness against Tottenham during their thrilling 2-2 draw, something the Brazilian was known for at Wolves.

For all of his flair and excitement at driving forward with the ball, the 26-year-old has found the net just once in 11 matches this term.

Ruben Amorim will want his final third output to improve, and perhaps investing in one of his former teammates can be the catalyst.

Man United plotting move for Wolves star Joao Gomes

Man United are long-term admirers of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, seeing the 24-year-old as a potential ball-winning machine to add to their ranks.

Sources have told Football Insider that Wolves could be forced into selling Gomes if they suffer relegation to the Championship, an outcome that is looking increasingly likely.

Wolves have just appointed Rob Edwards as their new manager in a bid to rescue their season, as the Old Gold are currently eight points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League.

Gomes has played a crucial role in the Wanderers’ engine room since joining from Flamengo in January 2023 and has developed into one of the league’s best ball winners.

He regularly finishes near the top for most tackles won in the competition; meanwhile, news of his potential arrival at Old Trafford will be music to Cunha’s ears.

Matheus Cunha has compared Gomes to Casemiro

Cunha and Gomes built up an incredible friendship during their time together at Molineux, even sharing the pitch for Brazil internationally.

The Brazilian duo also developed a brilliant connection on the pitch, with both playing a vital role in keeping Wolves in the Premier League last term.

When addressing the media at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Cunha spoke highly of Gomes, comparing him to current Man United teammate Casemiro.

“Maybe Casemiro is a bit older now, but I put Casemiro’s name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive,” United’s No.10 said in July 2024 via the E&S.

“I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.”

Cunha also labelled him as ‘unbelievable’, claiming he feels ‘very secure’ when he plays alongside Gomes, and that bodes well for the Red Devils.

“He is unbelievable on the pitch,” he added. “I feel very secure. I feel like I can lose the ball when I have my midfielders behind me. He played very well for the national team too.”
