Matheus Cunha: ‘Man United stumbling block emerges after Marcus Rashford latest’

Man United have been working behind the scenes on a move to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Man United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 25-year-old is one of Ruben Amorim’s top targets this summer.

Football Insider exclusively revealed in November that Man United have been closely watching Cunha this season with a summer move in mind.

However, his “huge” £62.5million release clause could prove problematic if United cannot sell players, with Marcus Rashford top of the list of departures.

Meanwhile, concerns about his attitude have also been raised and the Red Devils are believed to have looked into whether it may be a problem.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Arsenal were put off a move for Cunha amid concerns about his attitude following on-pitch and social media outbursts.

Man United work on £62.5million Matheus Cunha deal

Brown told Football Insider in February that Cunha is still likely to leave Wolves despite putting pen to paper on a new contract following the January transfer window.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked for the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham and Tottenham, has insisted United have been aware of his availability and have already begun working on the deal.

The talk is United want to sign Cunha,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s a deal I believe they’ve been working on for a while already.

“He’s a very talented player, but there have been suggestions that there are potential attitude problems there, which the club will be looking into.

“But he is a quality player and he’s proved that for Wolves this season.

“This £62million buy-out clause in his contract is huge, and it could be an issue because United haven’t got that sort of money to spend at the moment.

“They’ll be relying on Rashford to go wherever he goes, that will bring in around £40million.

“Then if they can sell other players they can raise the rest of the money, that’s going to be their aim before they can spend big money on Cunha.

Marcus Rashford to Tottenham update emerges

Amid ongoing speculation surrounding the future of Rashford, Tottenham are the latest side to have shown an interest in his permanent signing.

However, Brown told Football Insider on 28 April that Rashford is unlikely to join Tottenham as he is unconvinced that it would be the best move for his career.

He is also unwilling to take a substantial pay cut on his £350,000 weekly wage at United which could further complicate the deal.

Brown told Football Insider in January that Rashford wants to join Barcelona and would be open to a permanent move abroad should an offer arrive.
