Mathis Amougou to Chelsea: ‘Strasbourg move update after Deadline Day medical’
Chelsea fans have been given an update on their signing of youngster Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne, provided by the Times reporter Peter Rutzler.
The Blues have agreed a £10 million deal for the France U18 international [The Standard], with a medical completed on Transfer Deadline Day.
Rutzler, the London football reporter for The Times, confirmed that the deal “should be announced today (4 February)” with Amougou expected to join the squad.
The youngster is expected to stay with Enzo Maresca’s set up for the rest of the season, but his long-term future will be “revisited” in the summer, with the possibility of a loan move to sister club Strasbourg on the cards at that stage.
Despite being just 19, he has enjoyed a breakthrough season, making 17 league appearances for Saint-Etienne. His potential move aligns with Chelsea’s strategy of recruiting young talent for both immediate impact and future development.
Chelsea move for Mathis Amougou raises questions amid midfield competition
Football Insider Verdict
Chelsea’s pursuit of Amougou has left some fans puzzled, given the club’s already stacked midfield and their ongoing strategy of signing young talent under the BlueCo regime.
With players like Lesley Ugochukwu and Andrey Santos on their books, questions have been raised about where Amougou fits into the squad.
However, Chukwuemeka’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund and Joao Felix’s potential switch to AC Milan mean Chelsea have now reached their limit for foreign loans.

Amougou will join a midfield already stacked with talent, including Enzo Fernandez, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Romeo Lavia, and Moises Caicedo—all competing for just two starting spots in Enzo Maresca’s system. This congestion is one of the key reasons why Chukwuemeka pushed for a move, with the club willing to sanction his exit.
Dewsbury-Hall was also linked with a potential departure, with West Ham and Everton showing interest, though a move never materialised.
Primarily a central midfielder, Amougou has also been deployed in a deeper defensive role. It remains to be seen how Maresca’s side plan to utilise the young Frenchman and whether he will be part of the first-team setup.
In other news, Liverpool and Chelsea players have both responded to Evan Ferguson’s move to West Ham.
