Matt Doherty and three Tottenham teammates to be sold after ‘unheard of’ development – expert

Tottenham should replace all of their full-backs this summer despite some improved performances in recent weeks.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Matt Doherty, 30, and Emerson Royal, 23, started as wing-backs as Tottenham beat Newcastle 5-1 on Sunday (3 April).

Ryan Sessegnon, 21, and Sergio Reguilon, 25, missed the game through injury.

Wide defenders as key to Antonio Conte’s system and Wenham insists the current crop of players aren’t good enough.

“The fact that three full-backs were on the scoresheet against Newcastle is ridiculous, it’s unheard of,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They played very, very well and fair play to them for that because those players have not been performing for large parts of the season.

“But that’s Conte-ball. Would I still replace all of those players in the summer? Yes, I would.

“If Conte is getting this much out of players at their level, think what we could be doing with full-backs who are that bit better.

“It’s about improving and if Conte is going to stick with this system then we need better full-backs, it’s that simple.”

Doherty played on the left against Newcastle due to Sessegnon and Reguilon’s injuries.

The former Wolves man has bagged two goals and chipped in with three assists in his last six Premier League outings.
