Matt Le Tissier drops brutal Viktor Gyokeres verdict after what he’s seen at Arsenal

Arsenal will not need Viktor Gyokeres to score regularly win them the Premier League title this season due to their impressive defensive record.

That is according to Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier, who has exclusively told Football Insider that the Gunners’ solidity at the back could mean that one goal is enough for them to win most games in 2025-26.

Arsenal‘s shortfalls in attack last season saw them explore the transfer market for a prolific number nine in the summer to help propel them towards title glory this season.

Viktor Gyokeres joined the Gunners from Sporting CP for an initial £55million in July to do just that, and while they are currently top of the league, it is not down to his form in front of goal.

The Swede has netted three goals in his first nine Premier League appearances for the club, while his all-round game has also left a lot to be desired, yet Mikel Arteta‘s side may not need him to improve any to seal the title in 2025-26.

Gyokeres has struggled to score since joining Arsenal

Gyokeres scored regularly in Portugal, with 29 goals in 33 league games in 2023-24 and 39 strikes in 33 league games last season to alert a number of top clubs to his services.

His three Premier League goals so far came in the first four games of his Arsenal career, and two of those were against newly-promoted Leeds United, with one in that game being a late penalty.

The 27-year-old failed to find the net in over a month for club and country prior to his brace against Atletico Madrid last Tuesday (21 October), and he is still without a goal in the league since 13 September.

Despite his lack of goals, Arsenal have not struggled to win games since the new season started due to their impressive defensive record, with just three goals conceded in the league up to now.

Le Tissier insists Gyokeres won’t need to score 20 goals for Arsenal to win the league

Le Tissier has told Football Insider that he feels Arsenal can break Chelsea’s Premier League record for goals conceded if they keep all of their first-choice defenders fit for the campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker also insisted that Arsenal may not need a striker like Gyokeres to score over 20 goals this season to win the league due to their stellar rearguard form.

He said: “I think that defensive solidity gives you a great base. If you go into a game thinking, ‘do you know what? If we score one we’ll probably win this game,’ that’s a great mindset to get into.

And then you don’t really need a 20-goal-a-season striker. You can get away with it as long as people are chipping in from all sorts of places in midfield as well.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal continue to be this solid. Even if Gyokeres only gets a dozen goals and you’ve got the midfielders chipping in with, seven, eight and nine (goals), you can get away with it.
