Matt Le Tissier drops verdict on Wolves appointing Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards is a smart appointment by Wolves considering the profile of manager that they wanted to hire following Vitor Pereira’s sacking.

That is according to Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier, who has exclusively told Football Insider that despite it being a good decision to bring him in, he will have his work cut out in keeping Wolves in the Premier League this season.

Wolves have endured a nightmare start to the new season, with no league wins in any of their first 15 games to currently sit bottom of the Premier League.

They are already eight points from safety at this stage, and Vitor Pereira unsurprisingly lost his job as Wolves boss recently after a bad defeat away at fellow strugglers Fulham.

Football Insider revealed last week that Wolves were in talks with Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards after he had been identified as their top target for the vacant role.

Edwards is now expected to take over at Molineux soon after being put on gardening leave by Boro, with an almighty task ahead to keep the club in the top-flight.

Edwards is due to take over at Wolves before their next game

The international break has afforded all parties some time to complete a deal, with Football Insider revealing that Wolves are backing Edwards to unite the club considering his pre-existing relationship with their fans.

He played for the West Midlands side 111 times between 2004 and 2008 and was a first-team coach there between 2015 and 2017.

The 42-year-old led Luton Town to promotion to the Premier League in 2023 and most recently left Middlesbrough in third place in the second-tier after being appointed on Teesside prior to this campaign.

Edwards is unlikely to receive major transfer funds at Wolves in January, as revealed by Football Insider, and so it looks as if he will mostly have to make do with what he has to keep the club afloat in the Premier League against all odds this season.

Le Tissier backs Edwards to be a good fit at Wolves despite challenge to survive

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker Le Tissier insisted that Edwards is a solid appointment for what the Wolves owners are looking for, but admitted that it will be hard for him to succeed.

He said: “It depends what they’re (Wolves) looking at in terms of, like, the profile that they want for their new manager.

If they want somebody that’s had that connection to the club and feel that that’s the way forward, then obviously Rob is a good choice for that.

Kind of along those lines, Robbie Keane, who’s doing all right out in Hungary managing, he’s also played for Wolves before. I think he was in the odds as well.

It does feel like at the moment Rob Edwards is the one that’s in pole position. And if he wants the job, it looks like it’s going to be his. But he’s got a big job on his hands there.”
