Matt Targett may have played last Aston Villa game after confirmed news – pundit

Matt Targett does not have a long-term future at Aston Villa, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England full-back delivered his verdict after Targett joined Newcastle United on loan.

Villa confirmed on deadline day (31 January) the left-back had moved to St. James’ Park on a temporary deal.

He had not been dropped to the bench for their last two games due to the arrival of Lucas Digne.

“I’m sure he’s thought he’s not going to play between now and the end of the season,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“New manager has come in and brought in Lucas Digne and he fancies him over Targett. Fine, that’s an opinion. It happens in football.

“He’s got a chance to play Premier League football, his future at Aston Villa looks a little bit bleak and he may not play for them again because of Digne being brought in so he may as well go and play to show potential suitors what he can do.

“If he does well at Newcastle they may well keep him on next year. If they don’t and he’s done well there will be others out there looking at it.

“I’ve been in that position. If a player comes in who plays in your position and they’ve spent a lot of money on him, you’re second choice instantly.

“You’re not going to play that often, no matter how hard you fight for your position, the manager has brought someone in who he thinks is better than you, you have to accept it, that’s just how football goes.

“I think he’s done the right thing. Gone out there to play football to try and earn a deal elsewhere.”
