Matt Targett: Pundit ‘wowed’ as Newcastle tipped to sign Aston Villa loanee for ‘nothing’

Newcastle United should take up the option to sign Matt Targett after a potential fee was reported.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after it was claimed a fee has already been agreed for the left-back.

On Tuesday (8 March), The Chronicle reported Newcastle and Aston Villa have agreed a £15million fee for Targett.

The 26-year-old joined the Magpies on loan in January and has made six appearances in the Premier League so far.

He has only missed one game as he was unavailable for the Toon’s clash against parent club Villa.

McAvennie previously told this site Targett would not be joining Newcastle in the summer, however, he claims for £15million the deal should be done.

“I mean, wow, £15million, that’s nothing,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I was thinking Villa would be wanting far more than that. My logic was they could spend that money on someone a bit better.

“But £15million for someone with his experience is a brilliant deal.

“I was worried about the new owners not really knowing what they were doing in the transfer market but they have done well there.

“So, get that one done then focus on getting the other players they need if they really want to push on next season.

“Targett would be a great start because by all accounts he’s a good lad and he looks to have settled in.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa signed Lucas Digne from Everton in January, allowing Targett to leave on loan, and he made six consecutive starts after his arrival.

However, he missed last saturday’s (5 March) win over Southampton.
