Matty Cash: Aston Villa tipped to submit ‘tremendous’ defender offer after transfer update – expert

Aston Villa could offer Matty Cash a bumper new contract amid transfer interest from Atletico Madrid, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Claret and Blue striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old has “proven his doubters wrong” with his recent performances.

Poland international Cash has registered two goals and three assists in his last seven Premier League appearances.

According to Sky Sports (28 February), Atletico Madrid have “made contact” with the right-back’s representatives as they ready a summer bid.

Cash is contracted to Aston Villa until June 2025.

Phillips urged the Midlands club to keep hold of the defender by offering him a “better deal”.

“He’s a tremendous player, I think we’ve seen that recently,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“There were a few eyebrows raised when Villa brought him in, but he’s proven those doubters wrong.

“Naturally there will be interest when you’re playing as well as he is, and Steven Gerrard will not want to let him go – that’s for sure.

“If it takes a new contract to keep him at the club, then they’ll do It, I’m sure. The Villa board have plenty of money behind them and they’re very ambitious.

“If they’re trying to break into that top six, you’ve got to keep your best players – and unfortunately for them that means having to offer a better deal.”
