Matty Cash: Pundit demands harsher punishment after Aston Villa controversy analysed
Kevin Phillips has called for harsher punishment after an Everton fan was charged for throwing a plastic bottle at Aston Villa defender Matty Cash.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker found issues with the offender only being handed a football banning order for four years.
As reported by the BBC (25 March), was sentenced to eight weeks in jail with a further 12 months suspended after an incident in Aston Villa’s win at Goodison Park on 22 January.

The 19-year-old hurled a bottle at celebrating Villa players and the object hit defender Matty Cash in the face.
The Toffees fan has been ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and was handed a football banning order for four years.
When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the extent of the punishment handed out, Phillips said:
“Personally, I think they should be banned for life. He clearly intended to hit someone with it. Why should they be let back into football grounds? That is intent to hurt someone. We do not want that sort of thing in football.

“Everyone deserves a second chance but when you clearly know what you’re doing, you should be punished.
“It is just bizarre. I think it should be a life ban. You know what you’re doing. You know the consequences. Why would you even attempt to do it? It is crazy.”
