‘Always optimistic’ – Tottenham duo named by Pochettino as potential world beaters

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has said that he believes there are a number of Spurs stars who can compete with the world’s best and pick up individual player awards in the future

Monday saw the FIFA Best awards held in London, with Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo picking up the night’s premier trophy.

While none of Tottenham’s stars picked up any awards this year, manager Pochettino believes that the future could see his players up on the stage, naming duo Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris as potential future winners.

When asked by the London Evening Standard whether Spurs could see a player of theirs picking up such a commendation, he said: “Why not – and it is not only Harry [Kane]. Maybe Hugo Lloris or different players.

“It is important to believe they can achieve that level.

“It motivates you and we hope next season that we have a few players nominated.

“It was a massive motivation for us to be there yesterday. Hopefully it can help us achieve big things and be there one day. I am always optimistic about our prospects.”

Kane has been one of the world’s top marksmen in recent years, having netted over 20 league goals in each of the last three seasons, while also picking up two consecutive Premier League golden boot awards.

In total he has 112 goals in 177 appearances, while having also earned 23 England caps, scoring 12 times for the Three Lions.

Meanwhile 94-time-capped French international Lloris has been a key figure at the back for club and country, taking the captain’s armband for both.

He demonstrated his shot stopping abilities with an impressive performance against Liverpool in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

In other Tottenham news, the club are lining up a swoop for a 20-year-old midfield revelation.
