Pochettino: This Tottenham star can captain England
By Matt Bullin
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he believes Spurs striker Harry Kane has got what it takes to captain England.
Kane was left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad to face Germany and Lithuania after he picked up an ankle injury.
The 23-year-old has been in prime form for Spurs this season and has netted 24 goals in just 29 league and cup games.
Kane has already represented his country 17 times, scoring five goals, with his last game for the Three Lions coming against Slovakia in a World Cup Qualifier in September.
The Kane captaincy debate has begun as current England skipper Wayne Rooney no longer has a guaranteed starting spot in the team.
Rooney also missed out on the latest squad through injury.
Speaking to the Evening Standard Pochettino said, “I explain how I see Harry Kane. For me he’s a leader and why can’t he be captain one day of the national team and Tottenham too?”
Kane has captained Tottenham several times this season in Hugo Lloris’ absence and is known well by Southgate, having played for him for England’s Under-21s.
Southgate is a big fan of Kane and was quoted as saying, “Harry has definite leadership qualities. Harry’s got an opinion. He’s always happy to speak up in front of the group.”
The Spurs frontman has represented the Three Lions from the Under-17s up to the Under-21s, where he scored eight goals in 14 appearances before moving up into the senior squad.
In other Tottenham news, Alan Smith has claimed that this Spurs midfielder is better than Mesut Ozil.
