McAvennie demands action after Celtic fan controversy – ‘it’s disrespectful’

Frank McAvennie has claimed inappropriate chants at football matches are “not just a problem” at Celtic and Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider the former Hoops striker said it is an issue “up and down the country” and called for clubs to do more to help “stomp it out”.

Ange Postecoglou’s side defeated Ross County 3-1 away from home on Saturday (6 August).

The Scotsman‘s Andrew Smith reported (7 August) that inappropriate chants mocking the deaths of former Rangers players could be heard from the Celtic end of the stadium during half time.

According to Smith, football clubs have often used an inability to identify perpetrators as an excuse to avoid issuing bans.

McAvennie claimed clubs should be able to find and punish the culprits due to the number of cameras in stadiums.

I think it’s a football problem, I don’t think it’s just a Celtic and Rangers problem,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

There’s problems up and down the country not just in Scotland. I don’t know how to stomp it out. But there’s so many cameras, surely they can find people doing it.

Celtic

They’re banning people but is that enough? It’s disrespectful I think. People think they can get away with anything nowadays. It’s just stupid.

You’ve got to clamp it out. It is a thing that’s there in football now but it’s got to be nipped in the bud.
