McAvennie: I can't believe what my sources are saying about Tottenham move for Romero
Frank McAvennie claims Cristian Romero must play every minute of every Tottenham game next season if he signs for over £40million.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has heard from his sources that Romero may not go straight into the side, should he signs for Spurs.
On 23rd July, Football Insider revealed Romero has accepted Tottenham’s offer of a long term contract.
It is understood director of football Fabio Paratici is negotiating the structure of the £40million-plus deal.
Romero, 23, made 42 appearances for Atalanta last season while on loan from Juventus and helped Argentina win the Copa America this summer.
McAvennie claims Tottenham are doing the right thing by targeting a new defender but questioned what he’s heard from his sources.

“It’s the right move,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“They have had a midfield player playing in there [Eric Dier], they needed to tighten it up big time.
“I’ve heard some people say he won’t go straight into the team, he’ll have to be bedded in. That’s unbelievable.
“For the price they are paying he has to start every game for god’s sake.
“We’ll see what happens with that but oh my god, that would be so Tottenham wouldn’t it?
“Even if you pay £5million for someone and they don’t go in the team, it’s very strange.
“That’s just what I’ve heard from sources but for me, if you pay that much, you have to play every minute of every game.”
Atalanta signed Romero on a two-year loan from Juventus in September 2020 and hold a £13m option to buy.
This could lead to the Italian club making a massive profit on the player.
