McAvennie in awe of what he saw from McTominay, compares him to Man United great

Frank McAvennie has heaped praise on Scott McTominay and compared him to Man United great Darren Fletcher.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham and Celtic striker tipped the 24-year-old to enjoy a long career at Old Trafford, much like his Scottish countryman Fletcher.

McTominay started Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at West Brom on Sunday, having scored an extra-time winner against West Ham in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

The Scotland international has added goals to his game this season, with the midfielder netting seven times in 30 appearances across all competitions.

McAvennie is delighted to see McTominay “cementing” his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

“It was an instinctive finish against West Ham, a great finish,” he told Football Insider.

“He is not one of the flair players you expect at Manchester United but he does a job. He reminds me of Darren Fletcher. Maybe he is not this great player but he does the jobs that other players don’t.

“McTominay is not your Bruno Fernandes or Paul Pogba, he is not going to do something spectacular but he is cementing himself into that side regardless.

“Nobody knew Darren Fletcher would be in that team for that long but Fergie knew how important he was. McTominay looks like he is going to be at Manchester United for a long time and as a Scotland fan, I am delighted with that.”
