McAvennie issues emphatic Rangers verdict after ‘very damaging’ reveal
Frank McAvennie has tipped Rangers to “shine” if they “get back to basics”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said the Gers need to build their confidence back up and “start believing in themselves again”.
The Ibrox club were beaten 4-0 by Ajax in the opening game of the Champions League group stage campaign on Wednesday (7 September).
The European loss followed a 4-0 derby defeat to Glasgow rivals Celtic last Saturday (3 September).
As quoted by the Glasgow Times (8 September), Giovanni van Bronckhorst said his side’s performance in the game against Ajax wasn’t good enough.
The Ibrox boss said it was a “very damaging” defeat.
McAvennie said Van Bronckhorst’s side need to get back to the level they were at last season.
“Rangers are going through a transition at the moment,” he told Football Insider.
“I know that they demand to win every game, that’s pressure in itself. They’ve got a decent team but they’ve got to go back to basics. Get the basics right and then the rest will shine through, your ability will take you through.
“Stop trying to play the Hollywood passes and just play it five yards, ten yards and get the confidence back. That’s what they’ve got to do.

“Rangers got beaten 4-0 and we’re talking about them needing to get their confidence back whereas Celtic got beat 3-0 and their confidence was so high because of the way they played. It’s night and day.
“I think Rangers have just got to get back to basics. They’ve got to start believing in themselves again. That’s where the manager earns his money. They went all last year in the European run, we know how they can play they just haven’t really done it yet.“
