McAvennie issues Tottenham defence warning after early team news via Sky
Frank McAvennie has claimed Tottenham will likely end another season trophyless because of their defence.
However, the former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs need to address their defensive problems in order to challenge for the trophy.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed Davinson Sanchez will miss out on Thursday’s Conference League opener against Rennes.
The Colombian is set to remain in Croatia with teammates Giovanni Lo Celso and fellow centre-back Cristian Romero. The trio are quarantining following international duty.
Eric Dier could also miss the clash after limping off in the first half during Spurs’ 3-0 away defeat against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Dier and Sanchez had proved a formidable partnership prior to their respective selection issues, keeping clean sheets in each of their three Premier League starts together.

Japhet Tanganga stepped into the void against Palace but was red-carded on 58 minutes after a desperate lunge on Jordan Ayew.
As such, McAvennie claimed that Spurs need to establish a top-class defence before they can consider winning silverware.
“They should go and win it [the Europa Conference League], let’s be honest,” he told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“A couple of years ago they were in the Champions League final.
“But if you don’t have a base at the back, you aren’t going to win anything.
“They’ve not had that for a while now.
“They’ve got no decent centre-backs, no decent full-backs.
“They need four people who can work together, and they haven’t got that.”
Tottenham dipped into the transfer market to add two defenders this summer.
Cristian Romero joined on an initial loan from Atalanta, while Emerson Royal completed a permanent switch from Barcelona.
