McAvennie makes bold Patterson claim that Rangers fans will love
Frank McAvennie claims Rangers’ Nathan Patterson will soon elbow Stephen O’Donnell aside to become the top right-back for Scotland.
The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, made the bold claim despite O’Donnell’s Friday masterclass.
Scotland kept their Euro 2020 hopes alive with a spirited 0-0 draw against England at Wembley.
O’Donnell was selected to start despite a poor performance against the Czech Republic in Scotland’s opener.
He thrived on the right hand side and performed well against a strong England attack.
McAvennie claims Patterson‘s meteoric rise can only be aided by an experienced defender like O’Donnell.

“O’Donnell’s attitude has been great,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He can teach Patterson but for me, Patterson is my right-back of the future.
“O’Donnell worked wonders for Clarke. He knows him, he trusts him. That work will go unsung.
“Patterson is on his way up and he will have no fear. No disrespect to O’Donnell but that’s just my opinion.
“These lads coming through couldn’t care less about who they are up against and Patterson has talent in abundance.
“Patterson will relish the chance if he is handed it. That experience will only serve Rangers well.
“It’s a headache for Steve Clarke but it’s a good one.”
Scotland face Croatia on Tuesday knowing a win will take them into the knockouts of Euro 2020.
Whatever the outcome, Patterson will return to Rangers will a new wealth of experience after going to his first major tournament.
