McAvennie makes ‘terrifying’ Celtic claim – ‘I blame the board’

The Celtic board are solely to blame for the club’s poor squad and drop in form.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie claimed that opposition teams are no longer “terrified” to play at Parkhead due to the lack of quality available to Brendan Rodgers.

The Hoops suffered two consecutive league defeats against Hearts and Kilmarnock and crashed out of the Champions League at the foot of their group.

The board has been heavily criticised for a lack of investment, while numerous summer additions, including Marco Tilio and Nat Phillips, have disappointed in Glasgow.

McAvennie has slammed the board for a lack of investment and subpar recruitment that has made the Hoops a shadow of their former selves.

“Teams used to be terrified to come to Celtic Park – they’re not anymore,” he told Football Insider.

“I don’t like that. I look at the players, and others blame Brendan Rodgers, but I blame the board for not spending any money in the summer.

“They brought in a lot of players, but not any decent players. Not one of them has come through, it was awful.

“Players like James Forrest are getting a runout. He wouldn’t have expected to get so many minutes.

“It’s a strange one for me but I don’t think they have someone in that midfield.

“Callum McGregor is a great captain but you need to sometimes shout at someone to get them going.

“I know that’s not the way in football anymore but when I was on that park and I was losing the way they’re losing, then someone’s getting it!

“That didn’t do us any harm.”
