McAvennie names the two Rangers players who can spearhead famous win over Lyon

Frank McAvennie claims Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier need to step up if Rangers are to beat Lyon.

The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is predicting a tough night for the Gers.

Rangers start their Europa League group stage campaign by welcoming the French side to Ibrox on Thursday.

Lyon are seventh in Ligue 1 after a strong start to the season.

Rangers battled to edge past St Johnstone at the weekend and it took a moment of magic from Tavernier to win the game.

His long-range effort wrapped up the points after the Gers initially went behind at McDiarmid Park.

Morelos has already proven his worth in Europe this season, scoring in the Champions League against Malmo.

McAvennie insists the duo can make the difference at Ibrox on Thursday.

“Rangers aren’t at their best,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But Rangers are still winning games and that’s what matters. It looked a bit like they would lose again but they didn’t.

“There was a moment of magic and they pulled through. That will give them confidence because Lyon will be a tricky game.

“They are no mugs and it will take the best of Rangers to win. Those big players, Tavernier, Morelos, they will have to step up.

“They are the game changers.”

Morelos has scored three goals in eight appearances for Rangers so far this season.

Tavernier meanwhile has scored one and assisted four in seven total outings.
