McAvennie seriously impressed by Liam Scales and one other Celtic star against Rangers

Liam Scales and Gustaf Lagerbielke were “different class” for Celtic in the derby clash on Sunday (3 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie was massively impressed by the makeshift centre-back partnership.

Lagerbielke joined the Scottish giants from Swedish side Elfsborg earlier this summer alongside fellow centre-back Maik Nawrocki and Nat Phillips who is on a loan running until January.

First choice defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is out with an injury, alongside new arrival Nawrocki with Phillips also unavailable.

Lagerbielke had made just two appearances for the Hoops before being called up for the derby clash whilst Scales only started one game this season before the Old Firm after spending last term on loan at Aberdeen.

When asked what he made of Scales‘ performance, McAvennie told Football Insider:He is only a young guy and to play alongside another young player must be hard.

The two of them went for the same ball a couple of times. In the second half I thought both of them were different class, not just Scales and they will take so much out of that game.

It shows the players that have just come in what it is like to go and win at your biggest rival.

The Celts went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to a wonder striker from Kyogo Furuhashi in the first half.

The Gers had found the back of the net earlier in the half but the goal was eventually ruled out after Cyriel Dessers was deemed to have fouled Lagerbielke before setting up Kemar Roofe.
