McAvennie slams 'overweight' Alfredo Morelos after what he's just seen at Rangers

Frank McAvennie has told Alfredo Morelos to “get himself fit” to retain his place in the Rangers starting lineup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker insisted Morelos will “score goals” but doesn’t have the same influence on the team that he used to.

The 26-year-old returned to the starting lineup for the Gers against Napoli on Wednesday (14 September).

The Colombia international was replaced by Antonio Colak for the final 20 minutes of the 3-0 defeat.

As quoted by Glasgow Live after the game (14 September), Giovanni van Bronckhorst said his side didn’t deserve to lose 3-0.

The Bears boss added that his players gave Napoli a “tough game” and were “well in” the match from the first minute.

When asked if Morelos will keep his place in the starting lineup for their Premiership game against Dundee United on Saturday, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I see him in training and he looks overweight.

Could he play another 70 minutes? I don’t know. He needs games. He’ll score goals but whether he can have the same influence in the team I don’t know.

You’ve got to move. He just looks like he’s carrying a few pounds extra so that can’t be good for him. I don’t know why the coaches don’t take him out and get him fit.

When I came back to Celtic I was unfit and the manager told me that. The coaches took me out and absolutely battered me, took me on runs, just to get me fit. I don’t know why they don’t do that with Morelos. He’s here until January at least I don’t know why he doesn’t want to be fit and give himself a chance. The boy’s a talent but he needs to get himself fit, give himself half a chance.
