McAvennie slams 'terrible idea' from Aston Villa

Frank McAvennie insists Dean Smith is doing a “wonderful” job as Aston Villa boss amid speculation over his future.

The former Villains striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of Villa Park.

Football Insider revealed on (14 September) from an Aston Villa source that Smith is fighting for his job.

It is understood the sack is a possibility if he cannot inspire a turnaround ahead of the next international break.

A Villa source revealed Smith’s relationship with chief executive Christian Purslow has weakened following the departures of coaches John Terry and Richard O’Kelly.

Villa strolled to a 3-0 win over Everton on Saturday evening with new signing Leon Bailey in excellent form.

However, the result was only their second league win of the season.

McAvennie insists it would be a terrible move to sack Smith after all he’s done for Villa.

“I’ve said before, Smith is doing a wonderful job,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The results will come. You can’t make a snap decision after just a few games. That’s a terrible idea.

“He has an entirely new squad to work with. Smith has done so well for Villa.

“Look at where they are now compared to where they were when he took over. What are they thinking?

“It’s a different club, he deserves all the time he wants.”

Smith joined Villa, his boyhood club, in October 2018.

He led the club to the Premier League via the play-offs during his first season at Villa Park.
