McAvennie slaughters Rodgers for what he said after Celtic clash
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers should be wary about what he says to the press after their 7-1 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (October 1).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the 51-year-old’s comments about ‘not fearing anyone’ after their 5-0 win over Slovan Bratislava contributed to their 7-1 humbling at the hands of Dortmund.
The Scottish Champions were brought emphatically back down to Earth by a first-half hattrick from Karim Adeyemi, a brace from Serhou Guirassy, and goals from Emre Can and Felix Nmecha.
The defeat marks the third time in the past eight seasons Celtic have shipped seven goals in Europe’s elite club competition – losing 7-1 to PSG in 2017-16 and 7-0 to Barcelona in 2016-17.
Brendan Rodgers at fault for Celtic humbling
Rodgers has never made it to the Champions League knock-out rounds as Celtic manager, an unwanted record he will no doubt have an eye on as the Glasgow club continue to dominate domestically.
Home ties against Belgian giants Club Brugge and Swiss side Young Boys could prove pivotal in their mission to leave a mark on the continent.
“I felt really sorry for the boys”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I said last week when they beat Bratislava and they’re coming out and saying ‘We don’t fear anyone’, shut your mouth.

“You got Bratislava on a good night, everything went right for Celtic, you can’t come out and say things like that.
“The fans, do they want to hear that? No. Because they know you’re going to come up against good teams.”
